Guodao Liu, a research professor at the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, is an expert entitled to China’s State Council Special Allowance and directly contacted by the central government.
He received his bachelor's degree in tropical crops from South China College of Tropical Crops in 1985, and the PhD degree in crop cultivation and geoponics from the South China University of Tropical Agriculture in 2006. Since 2020, he has been serving as the Chairman of the Chinese Society for Tropical Crops. Guodao Liu is engaged in the research on the collection and innovative use of tropical forage germplasm resources. He has personally visited 9 provinces in southern China and 69 tropical countries for field research, scoring remarkable results in the collection and precise identification of resources, new species discovery, selection and breeding, as well as new material development. His research propels the development of forage industry in southern China and the progress of forage research in the world. He has published more than 100 papers as first or corresponding author, edited and released 28 monographs such as Chinese Tropical Pasture Varieties and Tropical Forage Cultivation, compiled and distributed the series of books including Practical Farming Techniques for Tropical Agriculture Going Global (in Chinese, English and French, altogether 16 volumes) and Shared Varieties and Technologies for Tropical Countries along the Belt and Road (9 volumes), which have contributed to the promotion of new tropical agricultural varieties and technologies in the tropical regions.
He won the Special Prize of Hainan Natural Science Award, 8 First Prizes, 2 Second Prizes and 3 Third Prizes of Science and Technology Progress Awards at provincial and ministerial level, and 2 Science Popularization Prizes of China Agricultural Science and Technology Award. As the main partner of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) that has obtained 2020 China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, Guodao Liu works with CIAT to open the SCI-indexed journal Tropical Grasslands-Forrajes Tropicales, and serves as the Chairman of the Management Committee of this journal. He was awarded the presidential sash by the President of FSM in 2018.In 2020, he won the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and the Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.
