Rice is an important staple in Africa, with a projected consumption of over 34.5 million tons annually by 2025 up from 11.6 million in 1996.
However, even though rice is produced in 40 of Africa's 55 countries, the quantities are often too little to meet the local demand. The deficit is bridged by importation.
