Radiant Chrysanthemums Brighten Futures in MaJiang County

In recent years, Nanjing Agricultural University has been implementing a long-term assistance model in Majiang, a mountainous county in the middle of the Guizhou Province. Prior to the university getting involved, the fragmented swaths of flat land limited the development of its industries. Its farmers barely made ends meet utilizing traditional farming methods. However, Majiang began to experience major changes after NAU introduced chrysanthemums from 1,000 km away. 

In 2016, the NAU expert team discovered that Majiang’s cool climate and unique karst landscape made it an ideal place for herbaceous plant farming and fresh flowers. NAU and Majiang County worked together to build a chrysanthemums far known as Yaogu Jiangcun (“Herbaceous Valley in a Riverside Village”). A long-term assistance model involving university, local government , companies, cooperatives, and farmers was created which has helped to reduce poverty and has promoted prosperity. Majiang County government has provided comprehensive support with chrysanthemum projects in areas such as policy, capital, and manpower. Since opening seven years ago, the (Yaogu Jiangcun chrysanthemum) farm has powered more than RMB200 million (27.89 million USD) of overall revenue generation.
