One of important cause of grain loss is heavy metals. Heavy metals in grain mostly come from the following five sources:

1. Tailings from mining, waste gas and wastewater generated in smelting, which are discharged into water or soil with rainwater or sewage.

2. Industrial sewage and domestic sewage discharged into farmland. For example, wastewater from the electroplating industry can cause pollution to the irrigation water, resulting in heavy metal contamination in the soil.

3. Fertilizers with a high level of heavy metals, and some misused pesticides, veterinary drugs and additives containing heavy metals.

4. Some heavy metals contained in industrial gas or automobile exhaust gas which then enter the soil.

Hence, it is necessary to ban heavily polluting factories, prohibit sewage discharge and reduce the use of fertilizers containing a high level of heavy metals in grain growing areas.
