Promotion of Sustainable Food System for Zero Hunger: Good Practice on Post-Harvest Loss Management from China and Africa

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed not just the fragility andweaknesses of the supply chains, but also and above all the challenges of limiting food lossesand wastes. China’s successful experience in reducing PHL and transforming its agriculture –throughambitious reform policies, promotion of technological innovations, massive investments ininfrastructure and machinery, and establishment of supervisory and support institutions atnational, regional and local levels – is a convincing illustration of public-private partnershipsand a holistic approach. The China’s experience could help Africa overcome the challengesbrought by PHL in food systems and rural development, by transferring new technologies andinnovative solutions. An effective post-harvest losses management encompasses thedevelopment of standards and regulatory frameworks that promote an enabling environmentand strengthen institutional capacity at local, national and regional levels.
